Dr. Harris' research and teaching interests include argumentation and debate, public address, political communication, and the rhetoric of sports. He is currently the Director of Debate and the Vice President of the American Forensic Association. He is the 2010-11 winner of the Gene A. Budig Teaching Professorship for the Social and Behavioral Sciences; 2010 winner of the Northwestern Debate Society Award for Excellence in Coaching; 2009 winner of the Ovid Davis Award for coaching KU to the National Debate Tournament national championship; 2006 winner of the George Ziegelmueller Award for Career Achievement in coaching debate; 2006 winner of the National Debate Coach of the Year Award, and in  1999 was recognized as an "Outstanding Teacher" by the Center for Teaching Excellence.
